Switzerland: There are no words. Part 1
We end our time in Switzerland tomorrow. It has been wonderful. Here is how it started. After a few crazy plane rides and airport hassles, we all ended up in Zurich, found each other and the apartment.
Despite a few mishaps, like missing our train to the Rheinfall and then getting locked out of the apartment, Zurich was surprisingly great. Of course it was Swiss National Day...but still. We saw a parade, the boys played in a fountain and, after missing our train stop, we found a small town further down the lakeside that appeared to have a waterfront park. We walked through the town and down to the shoreline just as a large and fierce storm swept across the lake. We were trapped under a small structure with a few other "lucky" families. The rain was coming down hard and sideways, forcing us to all huddle on one side together. However, when it cleared up, the lake was magnificently beautiful, with sun setting over the water and the surrounding mountains. We found a large party tent nearby where people were gathered to celebrate the day and watch fireworks. There was a band hired and the first song they played was "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" by CCR. Ha! We stayed for awhile, eating and drinking and dancing with Killian and DJ. Then we trained back towards the city and walked along the shore as it got dark, soaking up the festive atmosphere, music and hundreds of small local fireworks being set off around the lake.
The next day, after picking up our nice rental van, we went to Bern, explored the old town and made our way to the river front. Everyone was there and a lot of them were jumping into and then floating down the river. We joined them. Even DJ went in on my back for a short section of it. It was cold cold cold but felt so good after traveling and walking around so much in the previous couple days.
Then we drove to the Lauterbrunnen valley, which will deserve its own posts. However, I will leave you with a quote from my cousin Tommy on his opinion of the valley, "Expletives are the only way to possibly get close to explaining how beautiful this place is."
